Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. She was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson who worked in an ironworks, and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy was the youngest out of six kids. The father of Nancy was a fan of music and loved to play records with his children at home. This was a major influence in her early years. When she was just four years old, she knew she would be a singer. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the choir at church. At the age of 16 the singer began appearing frequently in Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy at the age of 17, had graduated high school, and then matriculated in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for one year, before deciding to pursue a career as a musician. In 1956 she released her debut album in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together from 1956 through 1958. Nancy's very first Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball adderley advised her to travel for a trip to New York in order to advance her career. The city she went to was The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. After just a few days, Adderley's manager heard her singing and hired her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records. That the same year, she debuted her first single. Guess who saw today. Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. She initially focused on rhythm and blues, under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B and began to embrace music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley collaborated in 1962, which helped push her up on the charts. The year 1963 was when she had her greatest success by releasing Tell Me the Truth. The following year, she was asked to perform in New York's Coconut Grove, the most famous club in America.
