Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson as an ironworker in Chillicothe on 20 February 1937. The mother of her child, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy is the youngest out of 6 siblings. Nancy loved listening to the records of her father and his passion for music. As a young girl she was already able to establish a strong sense of her identity and what she hoped to accomplish. The church choir was instrumental in developing the talent. When she was still in high school, she appeared regularly on Skyline Melodies. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began performing at the age of 15. Nancy was 17 when she had graduated high school, and then matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to sing. The first time she recorded was with the Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, which she sang with from 1956 to 1958. Nancy released her first album with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Adderley told her to move to New York to further her career and she went to The Big Town in 1959. Her agent heard her speak at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. Within a month of her arrival to New York, she was in the city. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records and in that same year she issued her first single. Guess who? Capitol released five Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Following the influence of Adderley, Nancy Wilson shifted from R&B to jazz. Their collaboration in 1962 with Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to the top as she released her biggest song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The following year, she received an invitation to perform at the New York's Coconut Grove, the most sought-after nightclub in America.
