Nancy Wilson was the first child of six. Nancy was heavily influenced by her father's musical tastes and the records that were played in her family home. As a young girl she was already able to establish an idea of her identity and the things she wanted to be. The choir at church helped develop this talent. After winning a talent competition on TV around the age of 15, she began to appear regularly on Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. In the same year, she began working in nightclubs. When she graduated from high school, the 17-year old Nancy was enrolled for a term at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University prior to dropping out and becoming a professional musician. She made her first recording in Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 to 1958. As part of the group, Nancy recorded her first album on Dot Records. Cannonball suggested that she relocate in New York and go to The Big Town to further her professional career. After just a few days after, her manager heard her singing and hired her. It was a contract by Capitol Records in 1960. That year, she debuted with the song. Guess whom I saw today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Following the influence of Adderley, Nancy Wilson shifted her focus from R&B into jazz. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top and, in 1963 she scored her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. This brought her a gig at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she became a star.
